The »Inner« Gap

Audiovisualizing the Societal Subconscious

Developed as a Bachelor Thesis, »The Inner Gap« is an interactive, audiovisual installation that examines the persistence of the Gender Pay Gap and systemic inequality within the 21st-century German arts and media landscape. The project bridges the gap between scientific research and creative technology, transforming abstract economic data into a tangible, high-confrontation experience.

The Concept: Fictional Equality vs. Reality

The installation centers on the discrepancy between the legal framework— specifically Article 3 of the German Basic Law, which mandates gender equality — and the lived reality of the professional world. By deconstructing the “unexplained rest” of the Gender Pay Gap, the project exposes the »Inner Gap« of ingrained societal stereotypes and traditional role expectations that remain anchored in the collective subconscious.

Interactive Installation
Design Concept

Utilizing a sophisticated technical stack, the installation creates a live communication layer between the user and the data:

  1. Depth Mapping: Using a Kinect 360 and »Delicode – Z Vector« software, the system captures a real-time depth image of the visitor.

  2. Generative Masking: Through WebRTC and custom HTML5 Canvas rendering, the user’s silhouette becomes a "hole" or window, dynamically revealing a video loop of societal clichés and dialogues beneath the surface of the interface.

  3. Atmospheric Audio: An endless audio loop juxtaposes the formal text of equality laws with real-world dialogues regarding career aspirations and wage disparity, forcing a direct confrontation with the pulse of the issue.

The Technology: Interactive Depth Sensing

The »Inner« Gap moves beyond static information design to create an environment of reflection. By making the "unexplained" explainable through motion and interaction, the installation challenges each participant to recognize and address the internal gaps that continue to define the modern professional landscape.

The Result: Beyond Data
